Git & Github Workshop

We are constantly using Open-Source software and technologies like Linux, Android, Firefox, WordPress, and the list goes on, but still, many of us are unaware of the benefits of Open Source and why many multimillion organizations choose to take this route to develop software. Git is the most widely used Open-Source tool and GitHub is the service for projects that uses Git.

Objective

When we talk about Open Source, we often hear the words Git, GitHub being tossed around, but do we really know what they are, their benefits, and how they are different? To clear all these queries about Open Source, Git, GitHub, Mr. Praveen Kumar was invited. Our aim was to enlighten participants about these buzzwords, thus encouraging our fellow college mates to contribute to the world of Open Source.

Event Details

Event was conducted by Praveen Kumar who is ranked among 0.01% people in stack overflow and has done his masters in Cloud computing in university of Leicester, England. In this event, our guest speaker guided us through the world of open source, its importance, benefits, and how contributing to open source will help students. He also directed to how we can take our initial steps to become an open-source enthusiast and a contributor. He explained the buzzwords i.e., Git and GitHub, and helped students understand these technologies and how to use them to their advantage. He also helped students join for GSoC. He introduced Hacktoberfest and motivated students to participate in it. The event was live on YouTube and more than 150 people registered for the event where as the video now has more than 500 views on it the event was a part of our ACM day celebration conducted between 20th and 21st September

Conclusion

This event was a collaborative team effort of all the students and teachers of ACM Student Chapter of I²IT. All the students worked very hard and endlessly to conduct events at such a level. Also, with students all the teachers worked untiringly, helping and guiding the students at each and every step.
