Write-Minded

“Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart.”― William Wordsworth This event was organised for writers of all styles–blogging, brand journalism, brand marketing for the ACM week’s Content Writing Competition. Everyone has a different style of writing, and respecting that, we welcomed writing skills of all kinds. This is the competition exclusively for students which will give them experience for content writing job opportunities

Objective

Our main motive was to give students a platform that enhances their writing skills. How they portray their thoughts and how they can convey the readers their mindset through their writing is what we considered for the event. Eventually this will encourage more people into writing

Event Details

For this event, we had over 20 participants from colleges all over India. We gave different topics to the students because the writing style of every person is different. The topics are given below- ● Humans have evolved with little resistance to abundant, easy food. Will we gorge ourselves and our planet to death? ● Clothes can be forms of thought as articulate as a poem or equation. Why then does philosophy like to dress them down? ● The god is the Universe, the dream our desire to understand, and the machines are the insane man, all repeating their obscure statements. ● Our world is a system, in which physical and social technologies co-evolve. How can we shape a process we don’t control? ● Are you excavating existing ideas, or do your thoughts come into being as you speak? ● We know music is pleasurable, the question is why? ● Women’s pain is often medically overlooked and undertreated. But the answer is not as simple as ‘believing all women’. ● Why therapy works is still up for debate. But, when it does, its methods mimic the attachment dynamics of good parenting. ● Some scientists think that there are intelligent life forms on the other planets and messages should be sent to contact them. Other scientists think it is a bad idea and would be dangerous. Discuss your views and give your opinion. ● Our personalities are predetermined as a result of our genes before we are born and there is nothing that can be done to alter our character traits. To what extent do you agree? ● The COVID-19 pandemic provides an unprecedented opportunity to begin to think through how we might harness collective behaviour and uncertainty to shape a better future for us all. ● Some people fail in school but end up being successful in life. Why do you think that is the case? What is the most important thing to succeed in life? ● The brain makes no distinction between a broken bone and an aching heart. That’s why social exclusion needs a health warning. ● Some people think poverty is the main reason behind most crimes. Do you agree or disagree? ● It’s evident that companies like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook are evolving. How can we clean up big tech’s big mess? ● Over the last few decades, the media has promoted the image of young thin women as being ideal. What problems has this caused? What solutions can you suggest? ● Some people think books are losing importance as a source of information and entertainment. To what extent do you agree? ● Having more money and less free time is better than earning less and having more free time. Discuss both your views and state your opinion. ● Many people believe that having fixed punishments for all crimes is more efficient. What are advantages and disadvantages of having fixed punishments? ● Can climate change be reversed at all, or is it an inescapable trend ? Discuss your views on this. ● Violence in the media promotes violence in society. To what extent do you agree? ● Some people think that intelligence is innate while others think that we can improve our intelligence through learning. Discuss both sides and give your opinion. The first criteria to judge the participants was by checking the content authenticity via a plagiarism tool. Upto 10% of plagiarism was acceptable. Later on, the next criteria was to check grammar and appropriate punctuation marks. After a thorough checkup of the write ups, the next criteria that was considered was how many points the participants could come up with and how creatively they have written about it. After shortlisting top five entries for the competition, they were sent to our judge, Prof. Vaidehi Banerjee. It was very hard for her to evaluate the results as all the top five entries were top notch. The final winners were chosen based on their style of writing, cohesion and coherence between points, language, relevance to the topic, and the flow of the content. The writings of the winner and runner up would be posted on our ACM website and published in ACM’s newsletter. The winners were also rewarded with the prize money.
